At just after 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, a 76-year-old male and a 69-year-old woman were walking on the sand at Ke Iki Beach on Oahu when they were swept out to sea by a huge wave.
Ke Iki is well-known for its powerful shorebreak. It’s one of the most powerful in Hawaii, which is saying a lot.
“Ke Iki Beach is the heaviest shorebreak I have experienced,” said Skidkids, a YouTube page for skimboarders. “If you happen to be in Hawaii on a day where a large North swell is building, I would recommend keeping a very safe distance from this shoreline. You will likely spectate the largest waves you have seen explode with thunderous energy right on the shore of the beach.”
According to reports, emergency responders were called at 7:35 a.m. with reports that two people were in trouble in the water. After a 911 call, firefighters arrived, followed shortly afterwards by lifeguards. The female was out of the water, but the male had been swept 120 yards down the beach. When they did manage to get him to the shore, both victims were in serious condition and taken to the hospital.
“It was really sad to witness,” Keahi Manoi-Hyde said. “The ocean is so unforgiveable [sic] down here. It’s scary.”
Almost exactly a year ago, one person was killed an another two were injured at the same beach.
