Vancouver Island can be a finicky place to surf. There are plenty of waves, yes, but the many nooks and crannies make having a bit of local knowledge a real boon. And one guy with a whole lot of local knowledge is Tofino’s Reed Platenius.
In the day leading up to Halloween, Platenius was keeping a close eye on the forecast. A system was spinning off the coast, and he knew that it was going to be good somewhere. But where, exactly, was up in the air. He, along with Michael Darling, Pete Devries, Ocea Green, Blair Forsyth, Eli Mara, Caleb Bentham, Luke Payne, Shea Bruhwiler, Sanoa Olin, and a few other friends made the call, packed up, and crossed their fingers.
When they arrived, that finger crossing had worked wonders. The rare right-hand point was working flawlessly, serving up the odd barrel, long walls, and some classic Vancouver Island scenery.
