Organizers of the Punta Galea Challenge have put competitors on standby for a possible run day on Saturday, December 6. The big-wave event in Spain’s Basque Country is on yellow-light status, with a final call expected 48 hours out. A €30,000 ($35,000 USD) purse is on the line.
Forecasts show a northwest swell of 10 feet at 15 seconds hitting the Spanish coast this weekend. Winds are expected to stay offshore throughout the day, according to current models.
Invitees include Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Ramon Navarro, Lucas Chianca, Natxo Gonzalez, Laura Enever, Justine Dupont, and Artiz Aranburu, among others.
The event window opened October 15 and closes December 31. The contest hasn’t run since 2019, when Lucas Chianca won, followed by Pierre Rollet, Indar Unanue, and Alex Botelho.
Punta Galea was part of the WSL (formerly ASP) Big Wave Tour from 2013 to 2017, producing memorable moments such as 10-point rides by Nic Lamb in 2014 and Natxo Gonzalez in 2014 and 2015.
