Weird wave? The weirdest wave! Photos: YouTube//Screenshot

Weird waves have been all the rage for the last little while. People like Ben Gravy and Dylan Graves carved out a spot for themselves in a very niche part of surfing, and it has paid off in spades. You may have seen one of the world’s weirdest waves after it made the rounds on the internet recently? And now the people who discovered it have released a video explaining how it came to be.

Chris White, the guy behind the Tension films, the infamous bodyboarding series, was exploring the coast of Western Australia, a place where the waves are about as wild and weird as they come. When he first saw it, Whitey thought it was two waves hitting each other.

“The very first time I laid eyes on it, I wasn’t filming,” White said. “I just had my still camera. We were exploring the waves and we just randomly ended up there. I got this photo, and at that point I just thought it was two waves hitting each other. Everywhere I posted it, people just thought it was fake, because it looks like it’s mirrored.”

It is not fake, Whitey assures the world. It’s a real wave in a real place caused by a real phenomenon. That first exploration ended up as the cover photo of a book White made, but he always wondered if it was just out there doing its amazing thing all the time. He wanted to find it again. And so he set out to do just that a decade later.

It can be pretty tough to find a spot 10 years later, no matter what the spot is. But when that spot is just a random blip in the middle of the ocean, one might think it would be impossible. Against all odds, though, he found it again. This time, he had more than a still camera and he managed to capture some absolutely stunning footage of a one of the coolest and strangest wave formations anyone could ever hope for.
