Nate Florence surfing the "Gurgle slab" in Hawaii

Weird wave, check. Good friends, check. Good times? CHECK. Photo: YouTube//Screenshot

The Inertia

There’s a good chance you’ve seen this weird little North Shore wave before. Nate Florence lovingly calls it the “Gurgle Slab” for reasons that should be fairly obvious. And recently, the sand and swell and everything else all lined up to make it gurgle exceptionally well.

This is not a wave that everyone could surf. It is a wave that everyone could attempt to surf, but it’s not a normal wave. Hell, it’s a wave that Nate Florence can barely surf. The take off is weird. The wave is weird. Waves break inside waves. Tubes tube inside tubes. Air drops are necessary, and the chances of making one are slim. But “making one” isn’t always the goal — sometimes, the goal is in the attempt.
