An Australian couple’s post is going viral for their hilarious reaction to an encounter with a tiger shark. The interaction took place in the appropriately named Shark Bay, located in Western Australia. In the video, the curious animal repeatedly approaches and circles the pair as they paddle by in a transparent kayak.
“A curious tiger shark checking us out,” describes the caption to their Instagram video, posted to the account jay.and.loz. The matter-of-fact description belies the reaction the kayakers actually had, which was a mix of fear, joy, and excitement.
It’s not the first time we’ve seen unique animal encounters in Shark Bay. Earlier this year, a study published in Royal Society Open Science analyzed the curious behavior of bottlenose dolphins in Shark Bay. The cetaceans were seen carrying sea sponges with their noses, in order to scour the ocean floor for fish.
