The Inertia

In surfing, there are famous surfers and there are legendary ones. All legendary surfers are famous ones, but not all famous ones are legendary. Tom Curren falls into the category of legend.

He’s been around for a while now, his competitive heyday in the rearview, but Tom Curren still surfs at an extraordinarily high level. He’s getting more interesting with age, too, riding weird things with weird fins in weird places, and he’s watched as surfing moves out of the ocean and into man-made pools. The man knows waves, whether they’re powered by a distant storm or some new form of technology. He surfed the Wavegarden Lab, a site “dedicated to the development of artificial wave technologies and high-performance surfing,” and Tom’s still got the magic touch.

The Wavegarden Lab is an interesting place. It’s a little over an hour from Hossegor and Mundaka. Ten short minutes from the Basque coastline. It’s a private facility that serves as Wavegarden’s R&D facility, so having someone like Tom there isn’t only a blast for Tom, but a real boon to those who want to hear his feedback.
