A little over a year ago, Maverick’s went wild. Luca Padua was there and he will never forget what happened.
“The unknown around this swell was felt by everybody,” Padua said. “We have no idea how big it’s going to be. Is it going to be safe? Is it going to be ridable? But we all had the same level of curiosity.”
As it turned out, December 23 was one of the biggest days in Maverick’s history. It was so epic that no one who was there in person will ever forget it. So epic that Padua and Evan Paterakis decided they needed to make the film you see here in order to properly tell the story.
From the outside looking in, it’s easy to think that big wave surfers just wait for a big day, paddle out, and ride huge waves. But there’s a lot more to it than that. Padua, along with Alo Slebir and a handful of other dedicated Maverick’s chargers, made the absolute most of a day that won’t be repeated.
