I’ve got a real preference when it comes to the kind of surfing I like to watch. I can appreciate the Filipes and the Italos, of course — the guys who are undeniably ridiculously good at surfing — but I like a cruisier surfer. Surfers like Kepa Acero and Torren Martyn, you know? And at the top of the heap for my personal viewing pleasure is Asher Pacey.
You’ve heard of him, but not because he’s screaming his name at the internet begging for views or because he’s winning world titles. You’ve heard of him because he quietly goes about his business of surfing extraordinarily well and extraordinarily stylishly. I think I like that kind of surfing because it’s a little more relatable to how I’d like to surf. Giant airs are not in my wheel house. House-sized barrels aren’t either. But a zippy highline and a turn that feels great? I’ll take that.
He’s often found on a twin fin, as he is in the video you see here, and like you and I, he often surfs waves that aren’t enormous and picture perfect. In this little film, shot by Jon Arman for Album Surf, he’s riding waist high, onshore waves… and he’s somehow able to string together a bit of incredibly stylish and smooth surfing.
