Lagundri Bay, more generally known simply as Nias, doesn’t generally do much in January. If you’re heading there to strike it off the bucket list, you’ll be going between May to September. Maybe, depending on the year, from from April to October. But January? It’s quiet. Or it usually is, anyway.
Near the end of January, on the 25th and 26th, a long period swell hit Nias, and locals and expats were pleasantly surprised. Since it’s one of the greatest waves in the world, it can get a little crowded during the surf season. But when the surf season comes early, the tourists aren’t going to be there.
“January is not the season for Big Nias, unless you wanna have some fun longboard, fun-size shortboard waves,” wrote Surf Raw Files. “But the first long-period swell came this year early to the Lagundri Bay. Mostly locals and expats scored with only a few people out!”
