Jordy Smith surfing a beach break in South Africa

Jordy Smith is definitely not your average surfer. Photo: YouTube//Screenshot

The Inertia

Jordy Smith is lucky. He’s lucky because he’s good enough at surfing to have had the chance to surf some of the best waves on the planet with just a few other surfers out. He’s good enough at surfing that crowds aren’t much of an issue. There’s a good chance that he’ll be the best surfer in any lineup he paddles out to. But still, Jordy Smith likes to find secret spots.

South Africa is a big place with a vast coastline. There are waves aplenty there, breaking whether someone is there to ride them or not. And while the wave you see here isn’t completely devoid of other surfers, it’s pretty damn empty. It’s worth noting, too, that many of the waves you see here would be nearly impossible for an average surfer to make a barrel on, but Jordy Smith is not an average surfer.

It’s a late drop. A tube so fast it would be considered a closeout to the Average Joe. Jordy, however, likes that kind of thing, and when he pulls up to what he called a “hidden beachbreak” and it was firing as hard as it was, he was licking his chops in anticipation. He’s got his pick of the litter when it comes to waves, and Jordy Smith is still looking for waves off the beaten track.
