The Inertia

Sofia Mulanovich announced that she’s organizing a professional surf tour in her home country of Peru. The Surf Fest Pro League, as she’s named it, will feature three stops: March 5-8 at Punta Roquitas, October 8-11 at Lobitos, and December 10-13 at Señoritas.

“For many years I competed on the world’s most important circuits, and I always had a clear idea: to create a professional platform here for our region,” said Mulanovich. “Today, that idea becomes a reality.”

The tour will be integrated into the wider ALAS Global Tour, which runs events around Latin America, featuring professional divisions as well as junior divisions for surfers under 14, 16, and 18.

Mulanovich, 42, was the first person from Latin America, man or woman, to win a WSL (formerly ASP) world title in 2004. She also won the ISA championships in 2004 and 2019, qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics where she earned an equal 9th place.

“Peru has always had incredible waves, world-class talent, and a rich history that continues to grow,” she said on her Instagram. “Today we are ready for something more.”

Peruvian professional surfers and fellow Olympians, Miguel Tudela and Alonso Correa, showed their support for the project in the comment section of the Instagram post.

The tour already has a sponsor, Yape, a mobile payment app in Peru, and Mulanovich is calling for more companies to provide support.
