Blacks Beach is San Diego’s swell magnet. Every surfer in the county knows that, thanks to the underwater canyon offshore, you can reliably expect a few feet more size, and the classic giant “canyon sets” that can spring up out of nowhere and clean up the lineup.
So when San Diego surf photographer Sean Evans saw Surfline calling for 8-12 foot waves gracing the shores of San Diego’s premiere beachbreak on February 7, he decided to go for a swim with his water housing to capture the action.
The result was big sets, a few barrels, crowd chaos, and plenty of drop-ins.
“I’ve never seen this many people out,” said Evans, who noted that he wore a helmet for protection in the busy lineup.
“No matter what you do you’re gonna get burned,” Evans joked with another surfer. “That’s why it’s fun for me. With the camera, it’s more fun.”
Evans, who recently launched his YouTube channel, gives detailed insight into the equipment he’s using and some of the technical aspects of his cameras. It’s a good watch for aspiring photographers or anyone interested in a fresh perspective of a surf session.
