The Inertia

Big wave cinematographer Tim Bonython called a March 3 Nazaré wipeout one of the “gnarliest” he’s ever seen at the Portuguese big wave spot.

Footage from local surf videographer Helio Antonio depicts Alberto Truncer dropping in on a wave, going straight, and getting completely engulfed by the lip crashing in front of him.

Truncer was pushed towards the rocky cliffs at Nazaré, but was picked up by his rescue team before things went south.

“How does one live through that kind of beating?” Bonython asked.

Another photographer, Andre Almeida, captured the straight-on view of the wipeout.

“I’ve seen heavy moments at Nazaré but today Alberto Truncer took it to another level,” he said. “One of the gnarliest wipeouts I’ve ever captured. This place doesn’t play, it’s beauty and brutality in one.”

Chatter in the comment sections report that Truncer was ok after the wipeout, and even went back out to catch a few more.
