For a year, John John Florence has been teasing anyone and everyone who remotely enjoys surfing. After announcing an indefinite break from the Championship Tour, he’s been sailing around the world to undisclosed locations, posting snippets of his travels on his boat, surfing mysterious slabs all by himself.
Finally, we’ll get a look at what the hell he was doing. We all want to know where he went (I doubt he’ll tell us), or, more importantly, see his freesurfing released from the shackles of scoring criteria.
Florence announced that he’s releasing a six-part series on YouTube — a continuation of his “Vela” series he started in 2020, the fourth and last installment of which you can see above. The first edit of the new series drops today — you can find it here — Wednesday, March 11.
“For me, this adventure isn’t a break from surfing, it’s a modern version of what surfing used to be,” Florence said in the promo for the series.
Florence premiered sections of the project last week in Laguna Beach, California, depicting his sailing travels last year with his wife, Lauryn, and son, Darwin. He said their goal was to “learn how to cross oceans, and see how many we can cross.”
Here’s to the most-anticipated surf film of the year. And if we’re lucky, there’s more of this content to come, given that Florence isn’t surfing on this year’s tour either.
