Lucas Fink skimboarding at Nazaré

The Inertia

There aren’t too many people on this planet who can surf maxing Nazaré. Those who do use towboards. Small, heavy things with fins and straps, not flat, finless discs. Lucas Fink, however, chooses to do things a little differently. He likes those flat, finless discs.

Fink isn’t just any old skimboarder. He’s the only one to surf giant Nazaré on one. He’s a five-time world champion, but he recently announced he’s taking a sabbatical from competition to chase big waves like Nazaré and Teahupo’o on a skimboard.

“I had this feeling going on for a while already, and just want to try new things,” Fink told The Inertia in early March regarding his break from competition. The video you see below is proof (if you needed any more) that Fink’s sabbatical was probably a good call for him.

“It’s breathtaking to watch, and even more nerve-wracking to film,” Barena Film & Sports wrote about the video you see here. “Every time Lucas drops in, you feel like the board might lose its edge and he’ll be swallowed by a 20-meter water monster. But that’s the magic of the world’s best! Here’s a glimpse of what Lucas Fink can do. If you don’t know his name yet, remember it — because he is redefining the limits of big wave surfing and skimboarding globally.”
