The Inertia

If you spend much time in the waters off Southern California, there’s a good chance you’ve been sharing them with a great white shark or two. Juveniles like to hang around near the shoreline, learning to become the apex predators they will be, but they aren’t really interested in us. When they get bigger and older, they move into deeper waters, but right now, great white sharks are already showing up. And some of them are much bigger than you’d expect this early in the year.

“Great white sharks are already cruising the Southern California coastline, and it’s happening earlier than expected,” wrote Carlos Gauna, a shark aficionado and cinematographer that has followed shark movements for years. “Over the last few weeks, I’ve been documenting white shark activity from the air and along the shoreline — and what I’m seeing right now is very different from years past.”

In the video you see here, shot using a drone, the water is incredibly clear. It’s perfect for seeing what lies beneath, and Gauna, who spends a lot of time searching for great whites, found what he was looking for.

“In this video,” he continued, “you’ll see a large white shark move along the coastline, pass directly beside a kayak fisherman near a pier completely unnoticed, and later, some of the clearest water I’ve ever filmed in California —revealing white sharks in incredible detail. These kinds of encounters are happening more often than most people realize.”
