No matter who you are or how long you’ve been surfing, you can benefit from keeping your body limber. If you want to surf better, do it. If you want to surf longer, do it. Lakey Peterson knows these things, and she, as a professional surfer, needs to do it not only to continue on being a professional surfer, but to simply surf until she can’t surf anymore.
The pop-up is one of the most important things in surfing. It sets you up for success if it’s done right. If it’s done wrong, you can blow the take off, land with your feet all over the place, or just generally feel… off. It’s a terrible thing, looking down the line as you paddle for a perfect wave, only to pop-up like you’ve never done it before. Lakey, along with Dr Tom, an Australian Osteopathy and former high-level competitive surfer (and Lakey’s husband, aka Thomas Allan), show four simple movements any surfer can do to make their lives a little bit better.
“Whether you’re a beginner or experienced surfer, adding this into your daily routine can help reduce discomfort, prevent injury, and improve your surfing fast,” Dr. Tom wrote. “Consistency is key — do this regularly and you’ll start to notice smoother, faster, and more controlled pop-ups.”
