The Inertia

The WSL announced that two-time world champion Tyler Wright has withdrawn from the Margaret River Pro. Sophie McCulloch will fill in as the injury replacement at the second event of the Championship Tour season.

Wright’s management did not immediately respond to a request about the type of injury she sustained or whether it will be a prolonged recovery.

Missing Margaret River will be a blow to Wright, who has historically performed well in Western Australia. She won the event in 2016 and has finished runner-up four times.

McCulloch will draw Bronte Macaulay in the opening round. She narrowly missed qualifying for this year’s Championship Tour, finishing ninth on the Challenger Series where the top seven qualified. McCulloch has two CT seasons under her belt, competing in 2023 and 2024, falling victim to the mid-season cut both times.

The WSL says that competition is likely to kick off today, the first day of the event window. The forecast calls for surf in the eight-to-10-foot range with favorable, offshore winds for the first half of the day.
