Miguel Blanco set off in search of waves on a dry African isle. It didn’t disappoint. Photo: Screenshot//Miguel Blanco

The Inertia

Portuguese tube-hound Miguel Blanco embarked on an odyssey to find waves. “No map. No signs. Just instinct,” he says. After searching around a sandy, African island for days, he found what he was looking for.

Blanco stumbled upon perfect, offshore tubes breaking close to shore. He scored the wave of his trip when he disappeared behind the curtain and emerged seconds later, escaping the crashing lip.

“Miles of dust. Endless horizons. Silence everywhere,” he wrote. “And just when it feels like there’s nothing left to find…a couple of donkeys point us toward a perfect right-hander.”

While he got a few shots to compete on the Championship Tour at Supertubos, Blanco has since left competition behind and reinvented himself as a freesurfer. And life post-competition seems to be treating him well by the looks of this video.

Blanco never said where this mythical wave is, but he speaks to the locals in Portuguese, if that’s any hint.
