Tidal bores are incredible phenomena. For surfers, they offer an almost-endless ride. It’s not easy to surf them, though, but if you’re a talented at foiling… well, you’re in for a treat. Adam Bennetts is nothing if not a talented foil rider, and a few months back he headed to France to surf Le Mascaret. Which just means “the tidal bore” in French.
While Bordeaux may be known best for its wines, it has a lot more to offer. The Garonne river, where Le Mascaret forms, is a long, snaking stretch of water that flows from the Spanish Pyreness to the sea at the Gironde estuary in Bordeaux.
When the stars align and the bore begins, it can be a crowded place, but there are plenty of waves for all. It’s not uncommon to see all manner of wave-riding vehicles, but Adam Bennetts chose the one best suited for a tidal bore. Using the foil to capture the energy moving under the surface, he’s able to pump his wave from wave to wave for as long as his body will allow it.
