Puerto Escondido has been on a bit of a run in recent weeks. Quetzal Estrada, a guy who knows the wave at Zicatela well, made sure that he wrung every last drop out of it. A week of 5 a.m. wake ups, heading to the beach in the dark while spring breakers were still sending it with bellies full of Jaeger. But Estrada likes to send it in a different way, especially when it’s this big.
“This was the biggest Puerto Escondido I’ve seen in years,” he wrote. “The final day of the 5 a.m. challenge delivered a swell that felt straight-up historic. Heavy barrels, nonstop energy, and one of those mornings where you know from the second you wake up that it’s going to be different.”
In the dark, standing amid the detrius of partiers, Estrada could see in the dim light just how big it was. He’d spent the week focussed on surfing, filming, and generally making the absolute most out of what nature wanted to give him, but the day you see here was something different.
“Puerto showed its real power,” he finished, “and this day was the perfect ending to the challenge.”
