The Inertia

Foiling isn’t all that old. Hell, I vividly remember seeing it for the first time in Step Into Liquid, when Laird and the Strapped crew stuck a hydrofoil on the bottom of a surfboard, stepped into snowboarding boots and bindings, and whipped into giant Jaws. It seemed, at the time, to be something that only people like Laird would get into. But now, all these years later, foiling is booming. There’s a generation of surfers who grew up with it, and Cash Berzolla is one of them. Which is why Patagonia recently added him to its roster.

“Cash is what happens when you give a surfboard wings,” Patagonia wrote. “Born and raised on Maui, the young waterman has been surfing his entire life and picked up foiling in his mid-teens. Cash surfs when the waves are clean and the wind is down; when they’re not, his foil turns bumps and chop into a magic carpet ride, allowing him to stay out on the water longer with his friends, be it in the ocean or on a lake or river.”

Berzolla is just 20 years old, but he rides waves like someone with far more experience. And he’s doing it with a style that’s all his own.

“Being on land can be so crazy and can make life feel super intense,” he said. “But when I hop in the water, I’m focused on one thing and one thing only. It brings me a peace of mind, helps me relax and most importantly, it’s fun.”

One thing is for sure: we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of Cash Berzolla in the coming years, because he’s already doing things no one else can do.
