The Inertia

As John John Florence continues his sailing travels around the world, he’s been pretty good at keeping the locations of the waves he’s surfing under wraps. But it’s hard to hide in the Caribbean surf hub of Bocas del Toro, Panama.

According to an article in Duke Surf, local surfer Ruben Villegas confirmed that Florence has been in Bocas del Toro with his family for several days, surfing some of the area’s renowned breaks. Bluff Beach, in particular, is known as one of the Caribbean’s heaviest waves, which his brothers visited last year. (And by the looks of it, the waves have been pretty good.)

“I surfed with him alone for about two hours,” Villegas told Duke. “He came over and said, ‘Nice to meet you, I’m John,’ and I replied, ‘I know who you are’ (laughs). He was super cool — really humble. He had a few wipeouts out there, too, because Bluff wasn’t easy that day. He’s traveling around with his wife and young son. They interviewed (local surfer) Juampi Caraballo and are currently gathering information about Bocas.”

Florence reportedly flew to the Bahamas to buy a bigger sailboat, which he then sailed to Bocas del Toro en route to cross the Panama Canal. It won’t be long until Florence’s location is unknown again as he disappears into the Pacific.
