He’d been to every city in Mexico. Came across an unclaimed piece of meat in Baja — turned out to be Rosie. The assumption was he picked a knife fight with somebody better. Found a passport in Sumatra, missed ’em by about a week in Fiji. But Johnny knew after all that searching and scouring the globe, Bodhi would never miss the 50 year storm when it hit Bells.
And so there they were, staring out at the angry sea while Bodhi waited for his set — a moment to slip past all those closeouts and get just one wave. He had to go down. He’d crossed the line. People who’d trusted him died.
Life sure does have a sick sense of humor, doesn’t it?
Or at least every surfer on the planet will flash back to that Point Break scene when they hear the story of a man in Brazil who was actually arrested while surfing (below). Bystanders in Brazil filmed the very un-cinematic moment when Credilson Costa Barros, 50, was sitting in the lineup on a depressingly small day at Praia do Olho d’Agua. Suddenly, police pulled up next to the surfer via jet ski, and a few minutes later he was back on the beach in handcuffs. According to Hour1 Globo News the 50-year-old has been facing charges for drug trafficking since 2023 and had an outstanding arrest warrant since 2025.
Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. Do not even think about paddling out for one more wave.
Who knows if Credilson asked for just one last wave or not, but if he didn’t at least make his case, then he missed the easiest surfer Dad joke of all time: “There’s cliffs on both sides. It’s not like I’m gonna paddle to New Zealand.”
