The Inertia

For any non-pro surfer visiting El Salvador right now, you might have better luck watching Punta Roca from the sidelines than paddling out thinking you’ll get a wave. As copious amounts of south swell slam Central America this week, the entire roster of Championship Tour surfers has been testing out their equipment at the cobblestone point.

A new freesurf video released by Pro Surf Media shows lineups shared by a slew of stars: Ethan Ewing, Molly Picklum, Kanoa Igarashi, Leo Fioravanti, Connor O’Leary, Gabriela Bryan, Bryan Perez, and many more.

There have been plenty of waves to go around for all the pros, albeit surely with a little lineup jostling. And all indications point to more of the same for the event window. Local Bryan Perez says it’s looking like the best Punta Roca forecast that the CT has ever had in El Salvador. The waves won’t drop below six feet, a dream scenario for the contest director to pick and choose the perfect windows.

Perez shared a few pro tips for surfing his home break: He thinks it’s best to surf at the low tide when it’s rising, ride a board on the heavier side because “the wave is powerful,” and keep an eye on the barrel sections — one near a submerged rock at the takeoff spot and another on the inside.

If you are picking and choosing which heats to tune in for, here are five that we earmarked to watch.
