Kelly Slater surfing a twin fin at Snapper Rocks

Twin fins are fun, aren’t they? Photo: YouTube//Screenshot

The Inertia

Kelly Slater is a guy who knows surfboards. He knows what the tiny little tweaks do to a surfboard’s performance. He knows what he has to do to get the most out of a surfboard. Ideally, of course, he (and everyone else) wants a surfboard that makes you forget you’re riding it. A surfboard that’s an extension of your own body. A surfboard that goes where it’s supposed to go and holds on tightly to the line you want it to stay on. Kelly is a little better than most (all) at making that happen, but he’s not often seen on a short little twin fin like he is in this video.

That’s not to say he doesn’t love a twin fin. He has the Great White Twin design under his belt, a twin fin modeled slightly after the body shape of… you guessed it: a great white shark. This is not that board.

This clip is a little under four minutes long, but Slater, in all his world title-ness, gets a handful of waves that would likely be the best wave of an Average Joe’s life. It was filmed at Snapper Rocks on a less-than-perfect day (which is still pretty perfect), but Slater makes the absolute most of it.
