First Point Malibu is a fantastic wave. It’s marred ever so slightly (ha!) by the lack of etiquette we’ve all collectively agreed upon, but the wave there gets good. Really good. It’s a wave built for stylish surfing, and of all the surfers in the world, Mikey February is one of the most stylish. So when Mikey paddled out on June 9, during one of California’s most epic runs of swell in recent memory, a YouTube channel called Salty Beards knew where to point the camera.
One of the most surprising things about this three-minute clip is the fact that Mikey manages to surf most of these waves alone. A good friend once told me in the middle of one of the most frustrating sessions of my life to date that at Malibu, “if you’re not in front of someone, you’re behind them.”
You can expect to get burned there. Not getting burned is a rarity, unless you’re a known face there like Allen Sarlo or, apparently, Mikey February. Even still, the wave is so good that it’s often worth it to just give in and enjoy the unsolicited party waves.
