Lance's Right surfing on June 12th

The Inertia

When there’s a big, straight south swell in the water, Lance’s Right is not the first place one looks. Throw a bit of west in there, and yeah, it certainly is. The wave wraps around the southern tip of Sipora in the Mentawais and there’s no doubt that it’s one of the best waves in the world on its day. And June 12 was one of those days, despite a less-than-ideal swell direction.

“South swell is not an ideal direction for Lance’s Right, a.k.a Hollow Trees,” wrote Surf Raw Files “The day started with morning sickness and later southeast wind, which was better for Lance’s Left on the other side.”

But as the day wore on, things began to change. The wind died and the famous right hander turned on. This clip was filmed from 4:30 p.m. until the sun hit the horizon, and it was a session everyone in the water is likely still thinking about a week later.
