Mikey February is one of the world’s most stylish surfers. He’s just about as stylish on land as he is in the water, and his most recent foray is proof: a modeling gig with Louis Vuitton.
Years ago, I was in Portugal for an event called Capitulo Perfeito. It’s a one-day thing, but I was there for a week. It was a fun seven days, smashed into a variety of vans that drove too fast and parked haphazardly with a variety of surfers, one of whom was Mikey February. Aside from his incredible surfing at what was described as the Day of the Decade at Supertubos, one thing stuck out to me about him: the guy is never not looking good.
While most of us were jet-lagged, ragged, and greasy, wearing old wrinkled clothes that smelled of damp bags, Mikey would arrive at the van in the pre-dawn darkness, dressed impeccably and moving with the same kind of stylish ease that he exhibits on a wave. It was maddening. I’d imagine that he would be an easy choice for a brand like Louis Vuitton to drape their wares over.

This is not Mikey February’s first go-around with the modeling world. Last year, he worked with Loro Piana, an Italian fashion brand that sells such things as $2,000 linen shirts and $1,600 calfskin loafers. His Louis Vuitton look was styled by Pharrell, the Grammy winning musician, producer, and fashion designer.
Although Louis Vuitton isn’t a surf brand, it’s not the first time the brand has dipped its toes outside of the straight fashion world. A few years back, it jumped on the surfing train and created a $45,000 surfboard (yes, you read that right). But I’d imagine that it’s not about making things that are functional in the water or on the beach… it’s about the lifestyle that non-surfers associate with surfing. Although if you’re a surfer, you know it’s not all palms trees, coconuts, and perfect waves. It’s snotty saltwater pouring from your sinuses and wetsuits that smell like piss. Just don’t tell Louis Vuitton that.
