Bjorn Dunkerbeck on a windsurfer

The Inertia

Windsports are cousins of surfing. Or maybe even long-lost brothers. Kitesurfing changed the game. Winging, and other wind niches are gaining popularity too, especially thanks to foiling. Surfers from places like Maui, where the wind is strong and comes often, know it’s something to be played with, not fought against. Fun hogs like Kai Lenny use windsurfing as another board for the quiver, given the conditions.

Yes, the wind can propel surfers to great heights, – and great speeds. As it did in 2021, when Bjorn Dunkerbeck decided to see just how much speed he could gather. Turns out it was a lot.

Dunkerbeck was taking part in the Luderitz Speed Challenge. It’s an annual speed sailing event held in Lüderitz, Namibia, and the goal is simple: go as fast as possible. That particular year saw Dunkerbeck hit an amazing top speed of 103 kilometers per hour, which is a little over 64 miles per hour, or 56 knots for the nautical minded. It was an amazing achievement that surely looked even more impressive in real life.
