Jordy Smith surfing in Durban

Jordy Smith is a fan of waves like this. Aren’t we all? Photo: YouTube//Screenshot

The Inertia

Jordy Smith is a fortunate man. Skilled, yes, but fortunate to have been the kind of person with the gumption to hone that skill to near-perfection. He’s surfed a million great waves on a million great days, so when he says a day was the “day of days,” it means something.

That’s exactly what he called this day at a semi-secret spot in Durban, South Africa. Smith, along with Chad Du Toit, James Ribbink, Josh Redman, and Brandon Jackson scored a supremely hollow day at a wave with a lip thicker than a losing fighter’s and a spit more powerful than a llama’s.

It’s not a wave that just any old Average Joe could surf. It’s a wave that requires a late drop, a set line, and a few crossed fingers. But for Jordy Smith, that’s a wave well worth giving a crack at.
