Shark Island surfing

The Inertia

The wave at Shark Island is a bit of a legendary one. It’s one of the world’s heaviest slabs, and in July of 2025, it put on some extra weight.

It was a day after the Shark Island Challenge (SIC), an amazing event that isn’t highly-publicized but definitely should be. Shark Island sits in Australia’s Sydney Basin. The wave breaks over a shallow slab of rock. The SIC organizers call it “a rock island of true mortal consequence,” and they’re not wrong.

Because the day you see in the video here — filmed by expert drone pilot Shaun Petersen of helihaus.tv , there was a lot of talent in the water, but that meant it was also a little more crowded than usual.

“Local legends mixed with some of the best interntional riders in the world frothed hard over the wedging dry reef slabs,” wrote Webodyboard on YouTube.
