John John Florence has surfed a lot of great waves. It’s his job, after all — well, part of it, anyway — and John has spent years on tour flying around to the best ones the planet has to offer. But there are still a few places he’s yet to surf, and recently he ticked another one off the bucket list: the waves of Bocas del Toro.
It’s a stunning place. Sitting in the elbow of the Caribbean off the coast of Panama, it’s a vibrant archipelago that looks like every tropical post card you’ve ever seen. Swaying palms, turquoise waters, and white sand beaches abound, and a few great waves break off those beaches.
John is in the middle (depending on how long he decides to continue) of an epic family sailing trip, exploring anywhere he feels the urge to explore. When this video was filmed, John and his family were nearly 400 days into their journey. The beachbreaks they found aren’t exactly the easiest waves to surf, but if you’re on John’s level, it’s just another day in the water. Under the lip take offs into throaty, sand-filled barrels are muscle memory for John, and Bocas has those on offer in spades.
“Loved these beachbreaks!” John wrote. “We spent all our time looking for barrels and avoiding storms. Excited to share more from this part of the world.”
