When Lance’s Right, also known as Hollow Trees or just HT’s, turns on, it is one of the most fantastically perfect waves on the planet. And on August 8, it showed what it was capable of.
Lance’s Right is named for Lance Knight, the guy who — according to lore, anyway — was the first to surf it in 1991. He found the wave on Sipora Island in the Ments while he was exploring the remote coastline in a canoe, and promptly realized he’d struck gold.
Now, not too many years later, Lance’s Right is one of the world’s most sought-after waves; a bucket list item for most surfers. Because of that, and the boom in surf tourism, the wave can get slightly crowded when there are charter boats buzzing around the lineup, but on this perfect August evening, there wasn’t a charter boat in sight.
“Around a 20-person lineup for the evening perfection was enough for the long period SSW swell to turn a good day to an epic evening,” wrote Surf Raw Files.
This short video was filmed from around 5 p.m. until sunset. A powerful SSW swell with an 18-second period was in the water, and everyone who was lucky enough to be there will certainly be talking about the session for a long time to come.
