If the average surfer were to walk up to this mysterious cobblestone break featured in Clay Marzo’s latest video edit, they’d probably look at it for a few seconds and turn around. Most waves are closeouts. There’s backwash. Getting in and out of the shorebreak looks like a great way to ding your board and roll an ankle.
Marzo, however, is not the average surfer and sees things differently. He sees makeable tubes when others see closeouts, a section to crack where others might kick out. He paddled out at the wave, which he called “f%#king heavy,” and made the funky setup look fun — not to mention he did it on twin fins and a soft-top.
The Album twin fins that Marzo is riding look particularly fast under his feet at this break. Just look at that tube he threads at 3:18 in the edit.
After years of largely flying under the radar, Marzo has been thoroughly documenting his surf sessions this year. And I think most surfers will agree that the world is a better place because of it. Here’s to more of this coming soon.
