The Inertia

John John Florence is on a grand adventure. He, along with his little family and whoever else wants to come and meet them in whatever far-flung destination they’ve sailed to, is bouncing around the world’s oceans on a sailboat. In this particular episode from his YouTube channel, they’re “somewhere south of Cuba.”

“Sailing in from further north it was such a contrast arriving here,” Florence wrote. “Some of the islands to the north almost felt like a desert. And then the rainforest on the Caribbean side of Panama is just thick with so much wildlife. It looks like it’s probably been the same for thousands of years.”

This installment was shot a few days before they made landfall for an absolute dream stop in Bocas del Toro, where he found some seriously throaty barrels, and, more importantly, some seriously interesting experiences. Surf trips are fun when you find great waves, but surf trips are even better when you find great people in great places. Places like Panama.

This corner of the world is nothing if not interesting. It’s a far different lifestyle than what much of the world lives. Slower. Calmer. And, if you like that kind of thing… better.

“Once we got closer to Bocas it was pretty cool to see everyone getting around by canoes or boat,” John said. “It’s like a waterworld with docks everywhere and little trails to get around the islands. And the local kids were super fun to surf with!”
