Mason Ho lives the search, as they say. Although he lives on the North Shore with the 7 Mile Miracle at his toes, great waves alone do not a surf trip make. Which is why Mason likes to head farther afield as much as possible. And if that farther afield place just so happens to have some of the grindiest, fastest barrels on the planet… well, so much the better.
Mason recently hopped on a plane to meet up with Keito Matsuoka, a Japanese surfer who’s spent more time in the barrel than most. In this video, they surf a wave that looks nearly impossible to make it out of. They do, however, make it out of a handful, but when you’re surfing an ultra-shallow and super heavy barrel that goes much faster than most waves, you’re crossing your fingers for an escape route while enjoying the view until you can’t enjoy it anymore. And whether that’s because you’re under water or because you found a doggy door doesn’t really matter, does it?
