A lot of people talk about what they’d do if they could do anything they wanted to do. Endless surf trips and beach houses, you know? But few of us really get the opportunity to actually take the family and a few years to go and do… well, whatever you want to do. That’s a big part of the reason that John Florence’s semi-recent escapades are so attractive to so many: he’s doing something many of us wish we could do.
Florence, the three-time world champ who decided to take an indefinite hiatus from surfing competitively in order to sail the world, is in the middle of a trip of a lifetime. He, along with his young son and wife, are cruising the oceans aboard their sailboat, searching for waves, fun, and adventure. So far, it’s safe to say they’ve found all of that… but they’re not done yet.
It’s not an easy life, though. Managing a sailboat is, to put it mildly, a lot of work. Having your family on board, far from help (or anything at all, for that matter) would be incredibly stressful. But the sweet is much sweeter after you’ve been dining on sour for a while. A the Caribbean was the sweetest of fruits.
“Sailing through the Caribbean, we learned that swells are super fickle in this part of the world and they tend to be short-lived,” Florence wrote. “Whether that’s from the swell energy itself or changing winds, there’s just a lot that has to come together. We had anchored here for a couple days, and when the waves started to pick up we couldn’t believe what we were seeing. We all got so excited. Lauryn thought it was probably the most beautiful water she had ever seen.”
