Kelly Slater surfing on the Gold Coast

The Inertia

Kelly Slater is the most famous surfer in the world. He’s reached heights of fame generally reserved for superstars of more mainstream sports like soccer, football, basketball, or baseball. Kelly climbed that mountain with a few tools: talent, drive, and a passion for trying something new.

Slater recently spent a few months on the Gold Coast, a place that feels like home to him. He knows the waves there and, in true Slater fashion, had his feet in the wax of a few experimental wave sliding vehicles when the waves allowed it.

In this short video from Dan Harmon, Slater can be seen on the new Mindcraft from Firewire and even more interestingly, on a little experiment from Daniel “Tomo” Thompson, a guy who has been behind a few very strange, very fun surfboards.

Slater isn’t exactly the best example for the Average Joe to see what a particular surfboard will do for them. But he is an example nonetheless. And under Kelly’s feet, these two surfboards can do a LOT.
