When Hurricane Marie sent a powerful swell toward Southern California, I knew I had to chase it. Over the course of several days, I filmed some of the biggest and most challenging surf I’ve seen in a long time — starting at a fickle Newport Beach point break that only comes alive a handful of times each year, then heading to the Wedge, and finally ending the swell at Malibu.
Some surfers found the wave of a lifetime. Others… well, let’s just say things didn’t exactly go according to plan. This edit has huge waves, heavy wipeouts, incredible rides, close calls, and plenty of moments that had me wondering whether I was standing in the right place. And when the waves are this big, simply getting back to the beach can be an accomplishment.
