John John Florence could be holed up in a rental house in San Clemente right now, counting the laydays as south wind crumbles the waves at the Trestles Pro. Or he could be surfing right point breaks by himself in Central America — an unlimited canvas to unload his whole bag of tricks. I think the world is better off since he chose the latter.
In Florence’s last vlog, he revealed that he had crossed the Panama Canal and was headed to the Galapagos before crossing the Pacific Ocean. He didn’t reveal where this rocky point break is, but he left enough hints — i.e., scenery, the names of the boats, how the locals speak Spanish — for the internet sleuths to figure it out.
This rippable right point allowed Florence to check up on all his maneuvers: gouges, cut backs, snaps, straight airs, rotational airs. He’s filling a gap in the sport that captivates the minds of surfers. It’s a reminder that empty point breaks are grinding along cobblestones somewhere out there, unridden until Florence sails into town.
Florence noted in the video that they wanted to dry dock their boat for a few days to work on engine issues, but the swell was too big and they couldn’t get it out of the water. So, they had no choice but to surf. Tough life.
“It’s crazy how we can never guess where we will end up or what it will be like,” the latest vlog says. “But it always seems to work out.”
