Mick Fanning is a living legend of the surfing world. He was already one of surfing’s biggest names before being attacked by a great white shark on a live broadcast made his name a household one. He recently sat down with 60 Minutes Australia to reflect on that infamous moment in time, as well as dealing with the loss of three brothers.
“The Australian icon opens up about his struggles with PTSD, navigating complex grief, and how becoming a father has reshaped his perspective on mortality,” writes 60 Minutes Australia.
Despite his success, Mick hasn’t walked the easiest road. Three of his brothers, Sean, Peter, and Edward, have all passed away since Sean died in a car accident in 1998. Mick was just a teenager at the time. Seventeen years later, Peter died in his sleep due to an enlarged heart — the morning Mick was competing at Pipeline with a world title on the line. Then, in 2024, Mick’s brother Edward died too, after a foot injury in Madagascar became infected.
Great tragedies, to be sure, but Mick somehow found a way through. Now, with some of life’s greatest road blocks in his past, he’s taking the time to look back and be grateful for the time he had with his brothers, as well as how the events of his life have shaped who he has become.
