It’s been an historically bad summer and fall for East Coast surfing. The Atlantic Ocean hasn’t churned out a single hurricane, while the Pacific Ocean has gone into El Niño overdrive and won’t stop pumping out massive storms.
However, East Coast surfers finally got in on the action as the season’s first nor’easter sent waves up and down the Eastern Seaboard. North Carolina surfer Quentin Turko went on a mission to chase the storm from New York back down to his home breaks in the Carolinas.
“Some of the biggest, heavy waves I’ve seen on the East Coast in 10 years,” Turko said. “So good to finally see waves barreling on the East Coast again.”
Turko and friends indeed found plenty of barrels in the tricky, blustery conditions, fighting strong longshore currents to get sand-bottom cover-ups.
While the Atlantic Ocean still has no hurricane activity in the works, it looks like another strong nor’easter could be brewing in the coming weeks to keep East Coast surfers busy.
