Jordy Smith is a very particular kind of surfer. He’s got airs in his bag of tricks, there’s no doubt about that, but where he really shines is when he’s got his foot on the gas pedal and there’s a giant face in front of him. Jordy Smith, to my eyes at least, is a power surfer first. And there’s no place to show off power than a wave like J-Bay. When it’s on, J-Bay is an absolutely perfect wave. It’s a wave that wave pools strive to look like.
The forecast looked almost perfect, but not quite. When Jordy awoke with the sun, however, it was clear that the direction was pretty much ideal.
“They said it was too west,” Smith repeats over and over again at the beginning of this video. “They said it was too wet, bru. Look at that!”
As you should have gathered from context clues, it was not, in fact, too west. As the sun rose in the sky, Jordy found himself riding waves almost too good to be true. Surfing is sort of a funny thing sometimes. Put a great surfer in mediocre waves, and the waves look good. Put a bad surfer in great waves, and the waves can look bad. Put Jordy Smith at firing J-Bay, and… well, everything is right with the world.
