John John and Nate Florence are, to put it mildy, pretty good at surfing. John is currently in the middle of a sailing trip that will certainly be one of the hightlights of a life full of highlights. In John’s latest YouTube installment, he and his brother traveled to a tiny island that’s mostly palms. Surrounded by shallow and sharp reef, there are waves aplenty — but not much else.
John had surfed the wave featured in the video before, but Nate hadn’t. “We were keeping an eye on a swell that popped up, and debated going until the very last minute,” John wrote. “It was a full day of travel and an overnight boat ride during the biggest swell of the year in this area.”
That means a whole lot of time to think about what they’d gotten themselves into and what they could likely expect, and it’s likely it was a mixture of trepidation and excitement. Those are the two emotions you want to feel when heading into the (relative) unknown, especially on a surf trip.
“Your mind running on what the potential could be is so hectic,” Nate laughed as he walked through the jungle with John.
“You’re like, ‘what does this do on the best day,'” John responded. “Like, ‘what does this wave do?’ And then you’re like, ‘what would you do to be there when it’s good?'”
As it turns out, the Florence brothers will go to the ends of the Earth to be there when it’s good… and the juice was well worth the squeeze.
