A Mexican judge is scheduled to reach a verdict today on the charges against three suspects accused of killing three traveling surfers in Baja California in April 2024, according to the Associated Press.
The three men, Jesús Gerardo García, known as “El Kekas,” Irineo Francisco, and Ángel Jesús, face charges of murder and aggravated assault. Last year, Ary Gisell Silva Raya, a fourth suspect in the crime and ex-girlfriend of Gerardo García, was sentenced to 20 years after pleading guilty to aggravated robbery and violent vehicle theft.
The surfers, Australians Jake and Callum Robinson and American Jack Carter Rhoad, went missing south of Ensenada, Mexico, on April 28, 2024. Days later, authorities discovered their bodies at the bottom of the well at Punta San José with gunshot wounds to the head.
According to Silva Raya’s testimony, she first asked the men for fuel, which they gave her. After the encounter, she told Gerardo García that the men had valuable phones and tires, but did not instruct him to rob them.
She says that Gerardo García told her that he planned to go “f%#k up the gringos.” Later, she claims he told her that he approached the surfers’ tent with a 9mm handgun and they willingly handed over their valuables and begged for their lives. Prosecutors believe Gerardo García shot the men while they resisted, then threw the bodies in the well.
The trial for the three men began in September. The parents of the Australian brothers, Martin and Debra Robinson, were present at the hearing yesterday in Mexico, demanding “exemplary punishment.”
