What would you ask Kelly Slater if given some quality, one on one time? I’m sitting outside, across from the 11-time world champ in a chic little downtown Santa Monica building known as the WSL headquarters. He’s hosting a party to unveil one of his new passion projects that doesn’t involve catching waves or making boards–a collaboration with PBteen to create eco friendly furniture. Jiff the Pomeranian is here, so this is definitely a big deal. The furniture is rad. Naturally, I know I’ll be asking Kelly how he got involved, etc. But beyond that, where do you even start a conversation with the biggest name in surfing? A guy that I’ve looked up to since I was a little kid. I want to know how much longer he’ll be in a contest jersey. I want to know what he plans to do once he hangs that jersey up. I want to know what’s going on in life outside of the ocean (which it turns out is quite busy). I also want to know if Kelly will be my friend. Because that would be cool. I want to ask Kelly a million and one different things, and before I know it, there are a couple of dozen people, cameras, and media members sitting around us listening in on the conversation.
Time flies when you’re chatting it up with the best surfer in the world and there’s a lot of ground to cover. It’s too much to ever fit into one conversation. So, what’s the first thing you’d ask Kelly Slater? -Juan
