Yesterday, the WSL publicly announced their new partnership with Brazilian broadcast giant, Globosat. The multi-year partnership will allow Globosat to broadcast live WSL webcasts to over 50 million viewers in Brazil. The cooperation is a groundbreaking business venture, as it signifies one of the largest media deals struck by the WSL, who has redefined its live webcasting in recent years.

With the rebranding of the WSL (formerly the ASP) and the crowning of the first Brazilian World Champion last December, the professional surfing tour has experienced unprecedented growth. “It is the most exciting time in the history of the sport right now.” said WSL CEO, Paul Speaker, in a press release. “The performances of the world’s best surfers, the dynamic venues around the globe and the unparalleled adventure, athleticism and competitive drama of professional surfing has surged in the past 24 months. Being able to partner with Globosat, exposing such a large audience to professional surfing, represents a major step for both our sport and our company and is further illustrative of the tremendous momentum the WSL is experiencing.”

The partnership between the WSL and Globosat illustrates both the strength of the WSL’s audience engagement as well as the integration of surfing into the Brazilian market. Additionally, the rise of the charismatic “Brazilian storm,” spearheaded by the 2014 World Champion Gabriel Medina, will only help capture the Brazilian audience. These elements will enable the WSL to advance live sports broadcasting while continuing to improve its quality and reach. Globosat Sports CEO, Pedro Garcia, said, “We have a long relationship with the surf universe and it’s such an honor for us to continue with the WSL, bringing the very best in the world of surfing.”
