Looks like El Niño got a little carried away after seeing Straight Outta Compton… “The Boy” appears to be listening (quite literally) to the controversial advice put forth by the late Eazy-E (F*ck tha Police).
Across the globe, coastal regions have been experiencing huge amounts of swell recently. From Hawaii (Jaws and Waimea Bay) to California to the snow-laden sands of the East Coast. For the Pacific theater, the primary driving force behind this uncanny run of swell is none other than this season’s Godzilla El Niño. And it’s starting to get out of hand.
Over the weekend in Chile’s resort town of Viña del Mar, a large El Niño-fueled swell battered the coastline with waves cascading over barriers and into public space. And kids and locals watched from a (somewhat) safe distance, like children in Brooklyn might flock to an unhinged fire hydrant in the summertime. To keep everyone safe, authorities including the Chilean Civil Defense showed up during the commotion. But one group of officers got a tad too close. As seen above, the blue SUV pulls into frame right as a big wave breaks over the wall. The water is moving with enough force that it flips the car. For reference, SUVs can weigh from 4,000 to 6,000 pounds. So, yeah…that’s some heavy water.
The town is about three hours North of Punta De Lobos, so you can bet the region’s infamous and perfect big wave left pointbreak has been getting some of the same swell. Hey Ramon Navarro, how barreled have you been getting?
